Machu Picchu by Train: What train takes you to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu train tour 2D/1N is a popular choice for those that have a short stay in Cusco, Peru or to those that wish to arrive at the citadel in a more relaxed manner. The most popular train companies to Machu Picchu are Peru Rail and Inca Rail. Both take you to Aguas Calientes town – the city below the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. You have the option of taking the Expedition Train Service (Standard) or the Vistadome Train Service (Upgrade). The Vistadome train service offers you panoramic views of the valley that surrounds Machu Picchu and it also includes a live show and snacks on board. The cost of the train is seasonal depending on month booked and time slot chosen to travel. Both train rides to Machu Picchu are approximately 4 hours long if departing from Poroy Station or 2 hours if departing from Ollantaytambo Station. Book your train tickets in advance for preferred seating and time availability as they do sell out fast.

Itinerary

Day 1: CUSCO TO AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN – MANDOR WATERFALLS

Your pick up time from your hotel depends on the Peru Rail train schedule. You will know this in advance and have the time confirmed in your pre-departure briefing the night before. TLP Adventure will pick you up with private transportation at your hotel and take you to the train station. After a 4-hour long journey along the Vilcanota River and Machu Picchu canyon, you will arrive at Aguas Calientes Town. Your Tour Leader will drop you off at your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to explore. We will meet for dinner and a pre-departure briefing.

Things to do in Aguas Calientes:

  • Visit the ‘Manuel Chávez Ballón’ museum and orchid exhibition. This is open from 9 am to 4.30pm, and is a 25-minute walk down the road from Aguas Calientes to Puente Ruinas. It is a very illustrative museum that gives you an interesting background introduction to Machu Picchu.
  • Mandor waterfall is a 2-hour walk round trip. You will appreciate the flora/fauna of the region.  If you are interested in bird watching walk a little farther you just bring binoculars
  • Hot Springs Aguas Calientes  10 soles Per Person

Day 2: MACHU PICCHU ADVENTURE

To avoid large lines and crowds we highly suggest you have a very early breakfast (5:00 am) at your hotel before taking the earliest bus to Machu Picchu. We recommend everyone to try and be the first ones in line because it fills up incredibly quick. Enjoy the first view of Machu Picchu and the sunrise (depending on the weather). Your tour leader will guide you throughout this magnificent site for about 3 hours. Afterward, you will have your own free time to explore this citadel and take numerous photos. If you book well in advance and have a Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain ticket, your tour leader will take you to the main entrance where you can explore these sites on your own.

Not everyone explores these sites, if interested be sure to mention this when you book your trip. If you choose to not purchase these extra sites, the Inca Bridge or Sun gate are free options located within Machu Picchu. Be sure to return to Aguas Calientes on time. Your tour leader will specify the time after your guided tour. The train ride back to Ollantaytambo is approximately 2 hours followed by a 2-hour drive to Cusco. We will drop you off at your respective hotels in Cusco.

Note: If you decide to change your train ticket or hotel stay at the last minute, Tour Leaders Peru Adventure does not cover any price change or transportation back to Cusco.
